The Brewers return home after their nine-game road trip in which they went 3-6 against the Diamondbacks, Giants and Cubs. This home stand includes three against the Pirates and three with the Astros. The Brewers are 6-4 against the Pirates this year including a record of 5-1 against Pittsburgh at Miller Park.Pitching match ups:
Friday - 7:05 PM CDT:
RHP Tony Armas (2-4, 6.93) vs. RHP Yovani Gallardo (5-4, 4.86)
Armas picked up a no-decision against the Astros in his last start. He pitched five and a third innings and gave up three runs and seven hits. Armas faced the Brewers earlier this year at Miller Park. In that start, Armas got a no-decision after pitching five innings and giving up four runs, three earned. He walked two and struck out six in that outing. The Brewers won that game, 6-4. In his career against the Brewers, Armas is 3-0 with 2.25 ERA in four starts. Prince Fielder is 2-5 with two homers and three RBI in his career against Armas.
Gallardo gave up four runs in the first inning against the Giants in his last start. He lasted only three innings and ended up allowing five runs in a loss. Gallardo has now been hit pretty well in three of his last four starts. He is 2-3 with a 9.00 ERA in five August starts. Gallardo is 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA at Miller Park this year in six appearances, five starts of which were starts. His only appearance against the Pirates in his career was in relief back in July when he picked up the loss after throwing two and two thirds innings and giving up four runs, three earned. Jack Wilson was 2-2 with a triple against Gallardo in that game.
Saturday - 6:05 PM CDT:
LHP Shane Youman (3-4, 5.59) vs. RHP Dave Bush (10-9, 4.96)
Youman made his 2007 debut against the Brewers back in June in Pittsburgh. He picked up his first major league win in the game by throwing six innings and giving up just two runs. His last four outings have come out of the bullpen. Youman's last start came August 13 against the Giants. He pitched five innings and gave up five runs in a loss. Johnny Estrada had two hits off Youman in June and Kevin Mench homered off Youman in that game.
Bush pitched six solid innings in his last start but the problem was that Bush was still pitching in the seventh inning against the Giants. The righty allowed a two-run homer to Guillermo Rodriguez in that inning to tie the game at four. Bush picked up a no-decision and gave up four runs on six hits. In his only start against the Pirates this year, Bush threw seven innings and gave up four runs in a loss at Miller Park. Bush is 0-3 with a 5.85 ERA in four appearances, three starts against the Pirates in his career. Freddy Sanchez is 5-8 with three RBI in his career against Bush.
Sunday - 1:05 PM CDT:
LHP Tom Gorzelanny (13-7, 3.50) vs. RHP Jeff Suppan (8-11, 4.78)
Gorzelanny picked up a win against the Reds in his last start. He threw six innings and gave up four runs and eight hits. So far this season, Gorzelanny is 2-0 against the Brewers with a 3.21 ERA in two starts. In his career against the Brewers, the southpaw is 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA in four appearances, three of which were starts. Mench is 3-9 against Gorzelanny in his career. Gorzelanny finished up the month of August with a record of 4-1 with a 3.27 ERA in five starts.
Suppan has now had back-to-back very solid starts for the Crew. Last time out, Suppan gave up two runs in six innings of work against the Cubs. He struck out four and walked none in a no-decision. This year against the Pirates, Suppan is 2-0 with a 4.32 ERA in three starts. Career wise against the Pirates, Suppan is 9-3 with a 3.97 ERA in 17 starts. Jason Bay is just 4-31 against Suppan but he does have a homer and six RBI against the veteran righty.
