Brewers (63-61) @ Diamondbacks (71-54) - Series Preview

The Brewers visit Arizona for the only time during the regular season. The Crew took three of four from the Diamondbacks last month at Miller Park. Arizona has been on a torrid pace as of late and are four games ahead of the Padres in the NL West.

Pitching match ups:

Monday - 8:40 PM CDT:

RHP Yovani Gallardo (4-3, 4.84) vs. LHP Doug Davis (10-10, 3.92)

Gallardo has struggled in his last two starts. Last time out, he gave up seven runs to the Cardinals in five and two thirds innings of work. In the month of August, Gallardo is 1-2 with an ERA of 11.40. He has only pitched in 12 games so far in the bigs but Gallardo's ERA on the road is 7.56 compared to 2.97 at Miller Park. Gallardo faced the Diamondbacks last month and pitched six scoreless innings to pick up the win. He gave up only three hits, struck out four and walked two.

Davis will be facing his former team for the second time this year. He faced the Brewers last month at Miler Park and picked up a no-decision. Davis threw six innings and gave up two runs and three hits in that start. The Diamondbacks won that game 5-2. Davis, who is on a five-game winning streak, won his last start by pitching five and a third innings and giving up four runs against the Marlins. In August, Davis is 3-0 with a 2.66 ERA in three starts. Craig Counsell is 5-12 with a homer and two RBI in his career against Davis. Kevin Mench also has a homer in two career at-bats against Davis.

Tuesday - 8:40 PM CDT:

RHP Dave Bush (9-9, 5.01) vs. RHP Livan Hernandez (9-7, 4.86)

Bush had a quality start in his last outing by pitching seven innings and giving up three runs. However, Bush did not receieve any run support and picked up the loss against the Cardinals. Bush beat the Diamondbacks last month when he threw six innings and gave up three runs at Miller Park. In his career against Arizona, Bush is 3-0 with a 3.72 in three starts. Both Mark Reynolds and Chris Young are 2-3 with a homer against Bush in their careers. No current Diamondback has more than two lifetime hits against Bush.

Hernandez picked up a win in his last start. He went seven innings and gave up four runs against the Marlins. Hernandez is 3-0 with a 4.05 ERA in three August starts. He lost to the Brewers last month when he gave up six runs, five earned in five and a third innings of work. In his career against the Brewers, Hernandez is 7-4 with a 3.51 ERA in 17 starts. Counsell is 17-42 with two doubles and four RBI against Hernandez in his career. Johnny Estrada is 9-25 with three doubles and four RBI lifetime against Hernandez.

Wednesday - 8:40 PM CDT:

RHP Jeff Suppan (8-10, 4.89) vs. RHP Brandon Webb (13-8, 2.63)

Suppan pitched five and two thirds innings and gave up four runs, three of which were earned in his last start. Also, Suppan gave up his first home run since June 27th in that start. He was charged with the loss against the Reds. Suppan will be facing the Diamondbacks for the first time this year. In his career against Arizona, Suppan is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA in five starts. New Diamondback Jeff Cirillo is 10-28 with two doubles and six RBI in his career against Suppan.

Webb will be looking to continue his dominance. He will bring a streak of 42 consecutive scoreless innings into this game. That streak is the second longest since 1969. The major league record is 59 innings by Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser. Last time out for Webb, he pitched another shutout, this time against the Braves. Webb gave up just two hits and struck out six in that start. Webb has pitched three straight shutouts. In his last five starts, Webb has struck out 35 batters while walking seven. Webb is 1-1 with a 2.68 ERA in six career starts against the Brewers. Prince Fielder is 5-7 with a homer in his career against Webb.
