Brewers (60-52) @ Rockies (56-54) - Series Preview

The Brewers hit the road to face the Rockies in a three-game set at Coors Field. The Crew went 3-3 on their six-game homestand against the Mets and Phillies. The Brewers took two of three games from the Rockies at Miller Park back in July. The Rockies are coming off losing two of three to the Braves in Atlanta.

Pitching match ups:

Monday - 8:05 PM CDT:

RHP Claudio Vargas (9-3, 4.78) vs. RHP Josh Fogg (5-7, 4.87)

Vargas had his worst start of the season last time out after having his best start of the year. He pitched only two and third innings and gave up seven runs including two three-run homers to the Mets at Miller Park. It was Vargas' first loss at home in 2007. Also, it was the first time the Brewers lost this year when Vargas started at Miller Park. In his career against the Rockies, Vargas is 4-0 with a 4.76 ERA in eight appearances, seven of which were starts. Garrett Atkins is 6-16 with three doubles, two home runs and five RBI against Vargas.

Fogg was charged with a loss in his last start. He gave up three earned in five innings of work against the Mets. At Coors Field this year, Fogg is 2-3 with a 5.54 ERA seven appearances, six of which were starts. Righties are hitting .322 against Fogg in 2007. Fogg has a record of 5-4 with a 3.84 ERA in 14 starts against the Brewers. Geoff Jenkins is 15-29 with three doubles, four home runs and nine RBI against Fogg in his career. Also, Damian Miller is 7-15 with a home run and two RBI in his career against Fogg.

Tuesday - 8:05 PM CDT:

LHP Chris Capuano (5-8, 4.86) vs. RHP Jason Hirsh (4-7, 4.91)

Capuano has lost eight straight decisions after losing his last start to the Mets. He gave up five runs and ten hits in six innings of work. Capuano struck out eight Met hitters in that outing. The Brewers have lost the 13 games that Capuano has started. Capuano is 4-2 with a 2.58 ERA in seven career starts against the Rockies. Those solid numbers even include Capuano's start against the Rockies earlier this year at Miller Park. Capuano gave up five runs in three innings of work in that start. At Coors Field, Capuano is 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA in in three starts. Matt Holliday is 7-17 with a double, a homer and two RBI against Capuano in his career.


Hirsh pitched for the first time since July 2nd in his last start which was against the Marlins last week. He threw five and a third innings and gave up three runs in a no-decision. The righty missed a month with a sprained right ankle. Hirsh is 2-4 with a 5.00 ERA (only a tad higher than his overall ERA) at Coors Field this year. In his career against the Brewers, Hirsh is 2-0 with a 3.97 ERA in two starts. Both of those starts came in the second half last year when Hirsh was a member of the Astros. Corey Hart is 2-5 with a homer against Hirsh in his career.

Wednesday - 2:05 PM CDT:

RHP Yovani Gallardo (4-1, 2.55) vs. LHP Jeff Francis (12-5, 4.01)

Gallardo picked up his fourth win of the year in his last start. He threw six and a third innings, gave up one run and struck out seven against the Phillies at Miller Park. Gallardo also scored the winning run in the game as the Brewers won 2-1. The young righty faced the Rockies back in July when he replaced an Ben Sheets. Gallardo threw four and two thirds innings in relief and gave up just one hit. That was Gallardo's first appearance against the Rockies in his career. Yorvit Torrealba was the only Rockie to get a hit off Gallardo in that outing.

Francis is on a seven-game win streak that includes a win over the Brewers last month at Miller Park. In that start, Francis pitched five innings and gave up six runs but still picked up the win. Francis won his last start which was against the Braves. He threw six innings and gave up just one run while striking out eight and walking none. In his career against the Brewers, Francis is 1-2 with a 9.77 ERA in three starts. Ryan Braun went 2-4 with two homers and four RBI against Francis last month at Miller Park.
